Piaggio likely to launch world's fastest scooter

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Feb 14: Italian two wheeler major Piaggio plans to introduce three of its frontline scooters in India shortly including Gilera, claimed to be the fastest scooter in the world.

Gilera, a virtual hybrid combining the best features of a scooter and a motorcycle, can cruise to an astonishing speed of 170 km per hour at the same time guaranteeing safety for the rider, Mario Empirin Gillardini, resident manager of Piaggio told PTI. The vehicle comes in four variants from 50 cc to 200 cc. The other models are luxury model Hexagon with a futuristic design and Vespa ET4, a four stroke single cylinder scooter which has an anti-theft immobiliser, digital clock and a retractable hook. It is an eco-friendly scooter, Gillardini said.

These models, he said, are to be introduced in India, notwithstanding the differences the Italian firm has with its Indian joint venture partner LML India Ltd, over the equity issue since the death of the Italian promoter. "All I can say is that we would like our dispute to bere solved amicably so that we can launch the models through them," he said.

Singhanias had moved a Kanpur court to acquire the stake on grounds that the JV agreement provided for buying out the stake of the other partner in the event of his death.

In a retaliatory move, Piaggios approached the international court of arbitration for justice. LML protested and approached ICC Paris demanding Rs. 300 crore as damages from Piaggio for making vague and baseless allegations in its arbitration plea.
