Cement output spurts 9% in January

Abhinaba Das
Mumbai, Feb 10: The cement sector has recorded a 9 per cent rise in production and a 7 per cent growth in despatches last month, spurring optimism that the rate of growth for the current financial year may exceed the 6 per cent level.Cement output in January increased to 7.57 million tonnes from 6.94 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year. Despatches were also higher at 7.58 million tonnes up from 7.06 million tonnes in January last year.Production during April-January increased by 5.25 per cent while despatches were higher by 5.35 per cent as compared with the corresponding period last year.Although the growth in demand is lower than last year, analysts say a recovery may be around the corner with signs of an increased pick-up in the coming months."Demand is growing by over 12 per cent which is an indication of revival of cement demand and if the same growth continues during the peak of construction period, the cement demand for calender year 1999 is likely to reach 8-10 per cent, as against 7per cent in 1998," says Gujarat Ambuja treasurer Anil Singhvi.According to data compiled by the Cement Manufacturers' Association, industry output during the first 10 months of the current fiscal scaled up to 65.37 million tonnes from 62.11 million tonnes in the same period last year, while despatches increased from 62.08 million tonnes to 65.41 million tonnes during the period. "Traditionally construction activities pick up during the last quarter, and we expect demand for 1998-99 to grow by at least six per cent," said a cement analyst.

"Last year, the growth in demand had shot up during the last quarter which led to an over 8 per cent growth for the full fiscal. We expect a higher pick-up in demand during the last two months, which may improve the figures for the current fiscal," the analyst said. The growth in demand, although higher marginally, is short of the industry expectations. Cement companies, faced with relatively low demand, have been deliberately scaling down production in recent months.Thewestern Indian markets have, however, started to look up with demand higher by 12-13 per cent, resulting in better realisations for cement companies. Prices are currently ruling at Rs 120-125 per bag in Gujarat, which is almost Rs 30 per bag higher than the October-November prices. Cement prices in the state during the last quarter had dipped to a 10-year low of around Rs 85-90 per bag. Even in Mumbai, prices have stabilised at around Rs 155-160 per bag following a spurt in demand Industry watchers are hopeful that the situation will improve considerably once the government's grand plans on housing and infrastructure reaches a take-off stage. The industry is optimistic that fresh sops will be made available to the housing sector in this year's budget, which will have a positive bearing on the cement industry.
