Mumbai, Feb 10: The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) today announced a country-wide awareness programme to extend technological and related support to the edible oil industry. Following the centre's Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order (1998), announced last October after the chain of dropsy related deaths in northern India during July 1998, the edible oils industry is expected to sell edible oils only in packaged form and not loose form.Though the last date for implementation of this order expired on December 15, the millers are still expected to follow the order in the interest of the consumers.
The order was issued by Department of Sugar and Edible Oils ministry of food and consumer affairs. However, the state governments have been empowered to implement this order and seek suitable extension to ensure that all the systems are in place for implementation.
Over the next three months till April, IIP, jointly with The Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade alongwith the edible oilsindustry members, will organise a series of awareness programme in different states throughout the country. The first of the series of the awareness programmes will be held in New Delhi on February 16.
To make the presentation more effective the seminar will be supported by suitable display of packaging materials. Technical literature, machines and other ancillary equipment, said an IIP statement.
