Weikfield, French firm sign pact

Our Bureau
Pune, Feb 10: Saint Dalfour Freres, a premier French food company, has signed a two-way strategic alliance with the Malhotra-family owned Weikfield house. As part of the alliance, Weikfield will be launching the French company's `St. Dalfour Rhapsodie de Fruit' brand of fruit preserve in the local market. St. Dalfour will be marketing a range of flavoured tea exported by Weikfield.

Weikfield is blending, flavouring and packaging the tea and exporting it to St. Dalfour. This year its flavoured tea exports are likely to be between $3 to 5 million and could go up to $10 million in a couple of years. Dalfour chairman Norton Cooper and Dalfour Freres managing director Claude Kistner were in Pune for the soft launch of the fruit preserve. The Dalfour fruit preserve, unlike traditional jams, does not use sugar, additives and colours and is cooked in grape juice. This makes it low cal and closest to the natural taste.

Weikfield International Corp managing director Mukesh Malhotra said it was for the first timethe produce was officially imported into India. Till now, such products were available in the grey markets in India at prices nearly two to four times the original retail value. Though this fruit preserve would attract a 60 per cent duty it would still be closer to the original retail price, Malhotra said.
