`Money wellspent is a blessing'

Punam Mohandas
I was not at all cut out for business or industry. I had to work at transforming myself and that was very painful. I had an opportunity to join the Foreign Service. Just like that. I would have liked that. I love to travel, and I would have been doing something for my country, too. But in any case, my father wouldn't have allowed it.

We were brought up by my father saying nothing spoils children so much as money. But money well spent is a blessing. I don't think it is a necessary evil. Without it, you can't do anything.

There is no one essential ingredient to success in business. A lot is based on professionalism. A commercial instinct. (You must know) how to make money... get along with people... follow the modern rules... A marketing instinct is most essential.

To earn a good name and respect, you must realise your social responsibilities. You are there to make money yes, but make sure society benefits, too. A whole lot of industrialists are not aware of that yet. The business of business isbusiness--no, that's not true.

Of course, ethics has a place in business today. Without well-run industry and economy, this interest in environment would not be possible.

Money is indispensable. You must know the art of using it correctly. Money badly spent could ruin people. One of the most important things in life is money.

The needs of the country are so great, you should feel you are holding the money in trust. In many societies, rich people are looked up to. Yes, but that should come only when people realise what they are doing with it (the money). Here in India, we extol them merely because they're rich. I think that's vulgar.
