New Delhi, Jan 20: The Indian Newspapers Society (INS) president Mammen Mathew has come out strongly against police highhandedness while dealing with Vishwa Nath, editor of Sarita, a Hindi fortnightly. In a press statement, Mathew expressed shock and anguish at the arbitrary manner in which the Rajpura police of Punjab came in strength all the way to Delhi not only to arrest Nath, but also his sons on the morning of January 12. The posse of policemen went to the extent of forcibly entering and searching their residences and causing anguish to the women and children of the family who were present at the time.
Mathew has stated that such an act on the part of any authority is unwarranted and amounts to blatant misuse of powers. He stated that it is unimaginable that this could happen with a publication group of repute in a country where the constitution gives the guarantee of free speech and expression. He stated that the INS condemns this act. While the law must take its course, this act of the officialsneeds immediate redressal and action needs to be taken against officials who gave the permission to the police to act in such an illegal manner. He, further stated, that the INS condemns all such transgressions on the part of authorities against journalists, publishers and publications.
