Calcutta, Jan 6: The recent raids conducted by the income-tax department on the Dhunseri group of companies, managed by the Calcutta-based SL Dhanuka/CK Dhanuka group, led to the seizure of valuables worth over Rs 1 crore, besides books of account, incriminating documents and papers relating to undisclosed investment in shares.The major listed companies of the group are Dhunseri Tea and Tezpore Tea.
According to sources in the department, warrants of authorisation under section 132(1) were executed at seven places in Calcutta. Besides, surveys under section 133A of the Income-Tax Act, 1961, were conducted simultaneously in Mumbai, Nashik, Delhi and Guwahati. In addition, searches were also conducted in three offices of the group in Jaipur.
The extensive search operations resulted in seizures of Rs 17.20 lakh in cash, Rs 21.30 lakh worth of jewellery and other assets worth Rs 1.78 lakh in Calcutta; Rs 30,000 in cash, Rs 16,000 worth of silver coins and other assets worth Rs 74.04 lakh inJaipur.
During post-search operations, many fixed deposits of the group with banks amounting to Rs 12.68 crore have been `prohibited'. The department is trying to ascertain the source of funds invested in fixed deposits by the group, according to sources.
The authorised officer conducting the search and seizure operations is empowered to serve prohibitory orders on the person in control of business operations restraining him from dealing, parting with or removing certain assets.
