BJP national executive bows down to centre economic policies stand

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Bangalore, Jan 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national executive on Monday veered round to accepting the government's stand on controversial economic policies.

The seal of prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's supremacy was brought out in the economic resolution adopted by the executive backing the government's decisions on foreign investment in insurance sector and patents bill and BJP president Kushabhau Thakre's acknowledgement that the government was the final authority on policy issues concerning the economy.

There was only a mild criticism of the government in the economic resolution when it spoke of ``slow result'' in kick-starting the economy in spite of the government's investor-friendly measures.

The resolution said the government was the ``best judge'' of what the country's economy needed and was ``best placed'' to take appropriate steps for this.

Thakre, on his part, said there was ``nothing wrong'' in Vajpayee's assertion that the government was supreme on issues of governance and declared there was ``no conflict'' between the party and the government.

``The government knows best,'' said Thakre, who in his opening address on Saturday, spoke of lack of proper coordination between the government and the party and criticised the government for not accurately feeling the pulse of the people on the issue of ``back-breaking prices.''

A highlight of the discussions in the national executive was the reported suggestion made by home minister LK Advani for a ``kamaraj-type'' plan that would require the union ministers quitting the government to take up party work.

This, he felt, would refurbish the party's image and the government.

The national executive also decided to set up a high-level committee, including the prime minister and the BJP president, for better liaison between the government and the party. BJP general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu will coordinate its activities.

Later Vajpayee left here for New Delhi.

He was seen off at the airport by Karnataka governor Khurshed Alam Khan, state ministers B Somasekhar, SS Patil, R Roshan Baig and city mayor KHN Simha.

Vajpayee during his stay here attended the two-day BJP national executive meeting and fulfilled official engagements at Tumkur and Mysore.

He also visited Chennai on Sunday to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress.
