US agrees to revoke ban on shrimp imports
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, DEC 27: The United States has agreed to revoke the ban imposed on import of shrimps from India, adhering to a ruling by the appellate body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), commerce ministry sources have said. However, Washington was yet to indicate the time-frame by which it would get the ban revoked, they said. The US had imposed a ban on shrimp imports from India, Pakistan and Malaysia on ecological grounds saying the fishermen of these countries were not using turtle excluder devices (TEDs), which would have helped in preserving rare turtles. India and the other two countries had dragged the US to WTO over it following which a dispute settlement body (DSB) was formed to adjudicate the issue.
