The reports of the prime minister's advisors--reputed businessmen all--are on predictable lines: their focus is on privatisation and corporatisation with a view to making public sector entities manageable, efficient and transparent in their working.
Tackling telecom
The draft of the new telecom policy for 1998 (NTP'98) has proposed the allocation of sweeping powers to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). TRAI was a quasi judicial body formulated in March, 1997, to oversee a smooth transition of the Indian telecom sector from a monopolistic environment to a freer structure.
Tilting at foreign policy windmills
One time honoured way of buying power and wealth is to make friends with the richest boy in class. Japan, in spite of her current difficulties, looks a powerful ally to have. She is also probably the one country who might need us almost as much as we need her.
