NEW DELHI, DEC 14: The prime minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC) on Monday recommended that the existing telecom licence fee system be replaced with a service tax. The council also called for the need to evolve an integrated policy to address telephony, Internet and cable services.The working group on infrastructure led by industrialist Ratan Tata also recommended free and unrestricted entry to all telecom services and corporatisation of the department of telecommunication (DoT).
The group which gave its report to prime minister AB Vajpayee on Monday also recommended strengthening of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) by entrusting it with licensing and standard setting, secretary to the Prime Minister's office NK Singh told reporters after the council's second meeting.
The group favoured a new policy on spectrum to address all wireless applications and enlarging the role of Trai to spectrum allocation in a transparent manner.
