December 12: In what could turn out to be a major face-off between the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (Citu) and its affiliate, the Calcutta-based Peico Workers' Union at Philips has decided to directly oppose the Citu directive of not blocking the sale of the company's CTV unit to Videocon.Confirming this senior office bearers of Peico Workers' Union told The Financial Express that: "The Citu headoffice and the West Bengal government has given assurances to the Philips India management so that the sale of the Salt Lake unit goes through smoothly."
"However, all employee-members of Peico Workers' Union have decided to oppose this as it is not in the best interest of the workers," the senior union member said. Philips India managing director K Ramachandran in Mumbai, on the other hand, said: "We have kept the West Bengal government informed of every development. We have their full backing as well as that from the Citu officials."
