RBI staff strike hits operation

Our Bureau

Calcutta, Dec 11: Work at Reserve Bank of India offices in all the metros was paralysed on Friday following the strike called by the All India Reserve Bank Employees Association.

AIRBEA general secretary Samir Ghosh said clearing houses did not function, thereby delaying the clearance of lakhs of cheques involving crores of rupees. No transactions pertaining to government, banks and foreign exchange took place. In several places, employees in the Class IV category also participated in the strike.

The AIRBEA was hopeful that the government would take appropriate note of the strike and "reverse the policies which have been threatening sovereignty of the country and ruining its economy and self-reliance by open door entry of multinational corporations and have bought untold miseries to the people."

The AIRBEA has strongly opposed the proposed IRA Bill and extended its total support to insurance employees fighting against the opening up of the insurance sector to "private moneybags and foreign agencies".
