Chandigarh, Dec 11: Parliament is likely to take up the Urban Land Ceiling Repeal Act and Rent Control Act next week while the Mortgage Act is also likely to be amended shortly. This was disclosed by union housing minister Ram Jethmalani while inaugurating INBUILD,98 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Chandigarh today.The standing committee of parliament, which considered the Urban Land Ceiling Repeal Act, was expected to submit its final report tomorrow, he said.
Once the report was submitted the parliament was expected to take up the Urban Land Ceiling Repeal Act. The government will also take up the Rent Control Act alongwith the Land Ceiling Act, he disclosed.
The presentation of the Rent Control Act, which is aimed at protectcting the interests of the landlords and the tenants, had been delayed because of the recent assembly elections. Jethmalani said that there was need to "rationalise" the Registration and Stamp Duty Act".
Jethmalani, who also inaugrated a conference on sustainable urban housing at the CII northern region headquarters, said that Congress nominee PM Sayeed was a "good man". The minister said that he would try to "influence the Bharatiya Janta Party to support the Congress nominee PM Sayeed as the latter was really a "good man".
During his address at the conference on sustainable urban housing, the minister said that 167.6 lakh dwelling units would have to be constructed during the 9th five year plan. Jethmalani said that he had proposed a new Voluntary Disclosure Scheme in which "secret money" could be invested by the holders in certain schemes.
Jethmalani said that the country would be needing another 3.3 crore dwelling units at the end of the 8th five year plan which entails massive funding.
He emphasised on the need for developing technology which could speed up construction of houses. The construction of more houses can also revive the industrial sector as 289 industries are directly or indicrectly involved in the construction of houses, the minister said.
