Yamazaki Mazak unveils technology centre

Our Bureau
Pune, November 27: The US $4-million Yamazaki Mazak India Technology Centre was inaugurated here on Saturday by the Japan-based Yamazaki Mazak Corporation executive vice-president Yoshihiko Yamazaki. "In the next two to three years the technology centre is expected to raise revenue of around $40 million via customer engineering and customer service and support," Yamazaki said. He ruled out the possibility of setting up manufacturing facilities in India. Mazak has also introduced its latest model CNC machine -- the Mazatrol Fusion 640. This is the world's first 64-bit CNC unit that fuses a personal computer with the CNC machines. The company has already sold one machine in the country and will be installing it soon.

The technology centre has been set up to exchange technology between customers and Yamazaki Mazak. The company is the largest producer of CNC machines in the world and has been in the Indian market since 1974. There are 130 installations in India and the centre will provide on-going support tousers of the Yamazaki Mazak machines. Till now this support was being provided by the Singapore-based group company of Mazak.

Apart from providing a 24-hour customer telephone support, the centre by April 1999 promises to send replacement parts to customers' factory or despatch a service technician within 24 hours.

Worldwide, Mazak also uses the technolgoy centre for refurbishing and renewing old machines. However as of now this is not being introduced in India but will be considered at a later stage, Yamazaki said.

The technology centre will introduce new technologies and offer customized solutions to customers' demand. The centre is a knowledge-based facility and Mazak will not be carrying out any manufacturing activities. Engineers will be permanently based at the centre to solve problems arising in the manufacturing technolgoy, training on CNC problems and machine operations. It will be organising seminars on latest factory management techniques and manufacturing technology.
