Calcutta, Nov 25: The Calcutta-bound MV Kalimantan Express, which was holed during last weekend's cyclonic storm, finally sank in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning about 17 nautical miles from the Sandheads.As reported exclusively in The Financial Express on Tuesday, the Indonesian vessel began sinking on Sunday. The crew has been rescued.
According to preliminary reports, the vessel, carrying 3300 tonnes of pulses from Myanmar, was holed during the storm.
But sources told The Financial Express today that the vessel was involved in a collision with a container vessel that was also bound for Calcutta. The container ship reached safely and is now berthed in the Calcutta dock system.
The 23 crew members of Kalimantan Express were rescued by another Indonesian vessel that got its SOS message.
The Calcutta port authorities were informed by Coast Guard vessel Sucheta Kripalini.
