Mumbai, Nov 18: Software exports from Pune will increase from Rs 270 crore to Rs 700 crore in March 1999, thanks to assured connectivity from the state-owned Software Technology Park of India (STPI). STPI has, consequently, decided to set up a 8 Mbps earth-station within the same period to cater to new units coming in the Pune infotech park at Hinjeweadi on a sprawling 150 acres, according to director and chief executive officer Sushil Gupta.
Gupta said that exports from Pune will be higher than exports from Bangalore and Hyderabad. Of the Rs 700 crore, STPI-promoted units will account for Rs 500 crore, while private firms will constitute the balance.
Gupta said that major contribution by STPI-promoted units will include Mahindra British Telecom, TCS, Kirtane-Pandit Information Technology, Computer Vision. Under the STPI scheme, all services are offered through a single window with an assured connectivity. He reiterated that these figures did not include volume of exports by units situated in SEEPZ in north-west Mumbai and other parts of greater Mumbai.
According to Gupta, software majors like Infosys, Wipro, Datamatics and others have already announced their investment plans at Hinjewadi. Gupta added that software exports thereafter will touch a record Rs 2,000 crore.
P Subrahmaniam, state chief secretary, said that Maharashtra was committed to developing Pune as a cyber city. He said that the government was also committed to providing necessary infrastructure, including assured connectivity, to these units.
Subrahmaniam, who heads the task force on information technology, said that the US-based Carnegie Mellon has already decided to set up an Indian Institute of Software Engineering at Hunjewadi. He has convened a meeting in the first week of December to review government initiatives on the development of Pune as a cyber city.
