Vlassoff head of UNFPA, IndiaMichael Vlassoff, a Canadian national, has taken over the charge of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in India. Vlassoff has to his credit a doctorate in economics with a major in demography from the University of Pune. Vlassoff had stayed in India, especially in rural areas, while pursuing his Ph D in the mid-1970s. He joined UNFPA, New York, in 1992 as senior technical officer in the technical and policy division.
Prior to that, Vlassoff was population affairs officer in the population division of the United Nations. UNFPA is currently designing and implementing its fifth country programme (1997-2001).
