MUMBAI, Nov 1: Hindalco Industries' target cost of production at its Rs 8,000-crore greenfield aluminium project in Orissa will be around 15 per cent lower than its present cost of production at $950 per tonne of aluminium, the company said.Even at $950 per tonne, analysts said, it operates at far lower than the world average of around $1,250 per tonne. "At around $800 per tonne, the Aditya Aluminium project will probably be the world's lowest cost producer," they said.
Hindalco president Askaran Agarwal told The Financial Express: "Unless we can produce at lower than our present cost of production, there will be no justification in setting up the greenfield project at such a huge cost." The proposed cost of production will ultimately depend on the technology linkages, Agarwal explained. "We have decided on the technology partners, but will announce them once we take a final view on the project,'' he added.
Agarwal said that consultants Kaiser-Bechtel will table the techno-economic feasibility reportby November-end.
