India needs to be a technology exporter: Kalam

NEW DELHI, Oct 28: A P J Abdul Kalam, scientific advisor to the Union defence minister, has said that in order to become a developing country in the true sense, India needs to be a technology exporter and the industry must design itself helped by DRDO laboratories that have been recently thrown open to industry.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Technology Summit and Technology Platform '98 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on Wednesday, Kalam said that industry, technology and progress were all linked to the country's GDP which would rise nine per cent only if was driven by a vision.Kalam highlighted the role of core competence for industry which included understanding customer aspirations followed by quality management. Design and software engineering, process engineering and production capability -- all this had to be the hallmark of this competence, Kalam added.
