Computers have invaded every professional field so much that future professionals with training in computer applications will certainly have an edge over the rest. This is true in the field of civil engineering too.Computer applications in civil engineering activities have greatly changed the working scenario. A number of software packages are available for engineers for planning, analysis and design, drafting, estimation and project management of civil engineering projects, from concept to finish.
With the objective of rendering professional training and to update civil engineers in these areas of development and applications, the Torsteel Research Foundation of India (TRFI), Bangalore, has two short-term courses: computer-aided drafting and computer-aided analysis, design and detailing of structures.
Computer-aided drafting is a level-1 course of 50 hours' duration designed with the following objectives:
To impart basic computer awareness, basic knowledge of operating systems and basicprogramming techniques
To train civil engineers in using AUTOCAD software for drafting civil engineering drawingsA degree, diploma or AMIE in civil engineering is a pre-requisite to undergo training in this course.Computer-aided analysis, design and detailing of structures is a level-2 course of 90 hours' duration designed with the following objectives:
To impart basic computer awareness, basic knowledge of operating systems and basic programming techniques.
To update engineers in both theoretical and practical approaches for computer-aided design and detailing
To train civil engineers in using various leading software packages (NISA/STADD/SERC/ AUTOCD) for analysis, design and detailing of structures frequently encountered in practiceThe emphasis is on hands-on computer experience supported by lectures from experienced faculty comprising civil and structural engineers. Project work will be suggested to individuals in the middle of the course which must to becompleted by the end of the course. Certificates are given to participants after successful completion.
Courses are conducted in the morning between 7 a.m and 9.30 a.m and in the evening between 6 p.m and 8.30 p.m on all working days. Intake for each course is restricted to 14 candidates.
The Torsteel Research Foundation of India (TRFI), which has planned these courses, was started in 1976, basically to transfer torsteel manufacturing technology to Indian entrepreneurs. It has zonal centres in Calcutta, New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
In 1980, TRFI diversified to offer advisory, consultancy and testing services in the field of civil engineering. The diversified activities today include: structural consultancy, proof checking of designs; quality auditing of constructions; non-destructive tests on concrete steel structures; geotechnical investigations and foundation designs and dissemination of technical knowledge through publication and workshops.
TRFI started the computer training centre for civilengineers under the banner of `Torsteel Technoclinic Pvt Ltd' with a view to impart basic computer knowledge to civil engineers. Torsteel is recognised by Autodesk as an authorised training centre for civil engineering applications.
