October 11: Mexico's Sorghum Council said it would create an alliance aimed at reducing the country's dependence on sorghum imports and covering national demand, estimated to reach nine million tonnes in 1998.The council's international affairs coordinator, Oscar Silva, said national production for the year was seen reaching just six million tonnes, for a deficit of three million tonnes. Government estimates import 1998 sorghum output at 6.17 million tonnes. Silva proposed producers unite to promote greater sorghum plantings and an expanded storage capacity.
Mexico traditionally imports sorghum from the United States. "Just yesterday we observed sorghum imports in poor conditions, both in terms of quality and sanitary conditions. "And they are sent precisely when Mexican producers are harvesting," he said. He called on the government to better regulate sorghum imports so to not hurt national producers. Mexico imported 2.016 million tonnes of sorghum in the first half of the year, Silva said, citing TradeMinistry figures.
