Gandhinagar, Oct 6: Gujarat needs investments totalling $29 billion in the infrastructure sector by 2010, including $15 billion in the transportation sector alone, state industries and minister Suresh Mehta said at the seventh annual World Economic Development Congress at Washington DC.Addressing the transportation infrastructure summit, a day before the annual meeting of the World Bank, he said the Gujarat ports now handling 51 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) were projected to handle 210 mtpa by 2010, serving a vast hinterland, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Incidentally, most of the industrial developments taking shape in the state are around ports. Two important studies, being conducted by Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB) on integrated transport system and the other on total infrastructure needs, were nearing completion, he said.
While the Indian delegation was led by union minister for industry Sikander Bakht, besides Sushma Swaraj and ThambiDurai, Gujarat was the only state to be specially invited at this year's economic summit.
Mehta also discussed with World Bank officials the possibility of funding projects to preserve the arts and crafts and archaeological sites like Dholavira in the state.
