MUMBAI, Oct 6: Nine new-generation private sector banks resorted to massive non-performing assets (NPAs) "camouflaging" and under-provisioning while preparing their balance sheets for 1996-97, a confidential Reserve Bank of India report reveals.While the RBI has estimated the NPAs of new private banks at Rs 328.21 crore, the actual figure shown by these banks is only Rs 205.03 crore. Similarly, the difference between the RBI estimate and the actual provisioning is Rs 96.85 crore. While the RBI inspection teams put the right provisioning requirement at Rs 120.30 crore, the new private banks made provisions of only Rs 23.45 crore.
Among the new private banks, Centurion Bank and HDFC Bank underestimated their NPAs by massive margins. Centurion Bank has shown Rs 2.60 crore NPAs while an RBI inspection team has found the actual NPAs at Rs 14.96 crore.
In the case of HDFC Bank, the reported NPAs are pegged at Rs 9.45 crore while the RBI assessment has shown the actual NPA level at Rs 43.52 crore.
Accordingto the RBI assessment, Global Trust Bank tops the list of new banks in NPA generation at Rs 92.49 crore (bank's estimate: Rs 72.71 crore), followed by UTI Bank at Rs 65.15 crore (Rs 34.42 crore) and IndusInd Bank at Rs 59.66 crore (Rs 48.78 crore).
For both TimesBank and IDBI Bank, the RBI has estimated the NPAs at almost the double the figures the two banks had preferred to provide. Both the banks have put their NPA figures at Rs 7.83 crore and Rs 3.36 respectively while the RBI has estimated them at Rs 14.53 crore and 6.36 crore respectively.
Similarly, the RBI has estimated the Global Trust Bank's actual provisioning at Rs 53.37 crore while the bank had calculated it at Rs 5.49 crore during 1996-97.
For IndusInd, the RBI team has found out a Rs 8 crore worth of under-provisioning by the bank. The central bank has put the figure at Rs 10.74 crore while the bank has estimated it at Rs 2.60 crore. ICICI Bank and Centurion Bank had calculated their provisioning as zero for the year. However, the RBI hasasked the banks to provide for 0.92 crore and Rs 12.82 crore respectively.
