HPS oilseeds exports touch all-time high

Our Bureau
Mumbai, Sept 28: Exports of handpicked selected (HPS) oilseeds like groundnut, sesame, safflower, sunflower and rapeseed/mustard have touched an all-time high at 339,893 tonnes valued at Rs 907.76 crore during the year 1997-98.

Pradeep Kotak, chairman of IOPEA (Indian Oilseeds & Produce Exporters Association), has observed that there was a steady increase in the exports of HPS groundnut and sesame seeds during the past four years. While exports of groundnut seed touched a record high of 2,25,221 tonnes worth Rs 557.16 crore, sesame seed fetched Rs 331.20 crore during 1997-98.

In order to further increase exports and ensure continuous suppy of premium export-quality oilseeds, Kotak said that a series of steps have been initiated for increasing productivity and quality upgradation.

However, in the case of other oilseeds like safflower seeds, sunflower seeds and rapeseeds/mustard exports of which are yet to pick up, he stated that attention should be given to issues like oil content in case of safflowerseeds and kernel size in case of sunflower seed (confectionery grade).

Referring to the revised regulations on aflatoxin in peanuts by EU commission, he said a strategy was being evolved by IOPEA to overcome the challenge.

He also welcomed the government's decision to allow futures trading in oilseeds, oils and oilmeals and called for an independent, autonomous body for the purpose with a large capital base, open network trading which can safeguard the interests of members and maintain transparency in trading a vital commodity with an estimated turnover of Rs 40,000 crore.

He requested the government to liberlise export of nigerseeds as well. He made an appeal for the members to become pro-active by seizing oppurtunities and facing challenges in the fast-changing scenario of international business with currency fluctuations, phasing out of subsidies and removal of trade barriers in WTO (World Trade Organisation) agreement.
