Star TV's local operations may break even by next year

Kochi, Sept 25: Star TV, Asia's biggest television network company, expects its Indian operations to break even by the middle of 1999. The international TV major will also launch three regional channels in the country soon.

Star TV senior vice-president Arrow Sinha Roy told reporters that the company's domestic operations would have achieved its target this year itself. However, it incurred a huge financial burden this year, owing to its decision to digitalise its entire operations in the country.

However, the digitalisation will help the company to cut telecasting costs in the long-run. With the new technology, a single transponder can beam 12 to 15 channels simultaneously. "This will help us reduce the transmission cost in big way in the long-run," Roy said.

The company's finances in the country were growing considerably with advertisement revenue increasing 100 per cent last year and 85 per cent this year, Roy said. The subscription revenue rose 65 per cent this year. "We could make such a progressdespite the recessionary trends prevailing in the economy," he said.

In its bid to reach the top slot in the country, the company will soon launch three more regional channels. The new regional channels will be in Gujarati, Bengali and Marathi, he added.

In tune with its corporate strategy, the company will make its now popular Star Plus channel more India-centric. Besides, the company will also beam an entirely new line of products on its other channels, including Star Movies, with special programmes throughout the week.
