Sept 20: Former Union minister, DK Taradevi Siddhartha last week urged Karnataka government to drop its move to slap three per cent cess on coffee. There was no point in burdening coffee growers with another cess as the product had already been heavily taxed in the state, she told pressmen in Bangalore.
She flayed the state government move to impose cess on coffee arrivals at the Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Societies (APMCS), as no trader would market the product in such markets.
The government has announced plans to impose cess on coffee and tobacco.Taradevi said it was not advisable to impose another cess on coffee when there was a recession in international coffee market.
Taradevi, who joined BJP on the eve of 1998 parliament polls, defended he BJP government's decision to review the constitution and described the opposition by opposition parties as "politically motivated."
She also flayed the agitation by Congress party over rejection of Srikrishna commission report and the recent Cauveryaccord. The Cauvery accord evolved by the prime minister, AB Vajpayee was the best under the prevailing circumstances, she said.
