Calcutta, Sept 4: The Canada-based Bata Shoe Organisation (BSO) has put subsidiary Bata India's factory at Batanagar in West Bengal `under watch' after the assault of company managing director Keith Weston, on July 22, by office bearers of the Bata Mazdoor Union.Bata India vice-president MJZ Mowla said the incident at the world's largest footwear factory had upset the BSO top brass. Militant trade unionism will not be tolerated in the company, he added.
BSO's top-level four-day meeting, which ended in Calcutta on Friday, took serious view of the incident. Chief executive officer Rino Rizzo also expressed disappointment over the issue being politicised.
Quoting Rizzo, Mowla said Bata India was here to conduct business and not indulge in politics. Mowla said, the BSO chief was appalled at the fact that no arrests were made by the West Bengal government inspite of the filing of first information reports (FIRs) against two office bearers of union, soon after the assault on Weston.
Rizzo said that BSO wasvery concerned and will take necessary steps to ensure healthy trade unionism.
