BPL Engineering to shift Maddur facility

K Baburajan
BANGALORE, Sept 3: BPL Engineering Ltd has decided to relocate its power cords and cable harness manufacturing facility from Maddur to Basavapura near Bangalore.

This is part of the company's effort to bring cost effective components in the domestic market. The decision to relocate the production unit from Maddur will help the company reduce overheads substantially.

While Maddur is located about 60 km from the city, the new location is on the Hosur Road near Bangalore. BPL Engineering at present has three manufacturing facilities located at Bommanahalli and Basavapura in Bangalore, and Pashamylaram in Andhra Pradesh.

"As part of our expansion plans we are developing power supply module for RF Communication for Motorola India. Negotiations with the company are at final stages for production and supply," BPL group sources said.

The company is also unveiling the prototype of cellular battery chargers, along with other new products like transducers and telephone ringers. The company had developed cellular-battery chargers last fiscal. Other plans include launching of the full range of car stereo speakers.

The company's component division has drawn up major plans for the current fiscal, sources added. The division plans to unveil Hifi PRO and BGM Speakers and improve the Hall Mark range of speakers which were introduced during 1996-97.

The division will increase the export of speakers and tap the overseas market for transformers and power cords. Last fiscal it had exported speakers worth Rs 50 lakh to the south-east Asian countries. The export was mainly on an original equipment manufacturer basis for companies like Sony, Sharp, Thomson, and Whirlpool. During the last fiscal the company's components division reported a turnover of Rs 49.02 crore (Rs 43.52 crore). The company's total revenue stands at Rs 119.12 crore for 1997-98.
