Kutch projects yet to get wildlife clearance

Calcutta, August 29: The mineral projects proposed to come up in Kutch district of Gujarat are stuck as they are yet to get wildlife sanctuary clearances. The lignite, bauxite, bentonite and China clay deposits prospected by the department have not been acquired for mineral concession due to this constraint, according to Gujarat's additional director of geology and mining, J V Bhatt.Two wildlife sanctuaries are coming in the way of industrialisation of the district. Bhatt said the state government, in a notification dated August 9, 1995, proclaimed Chinkara a 451-hectare sanctuary. Prospecting carried out by the state department for lignite, bauxite, limestone and bentonite has shown sizable reserves of these materials in the sanctuary area. Bhatt said discussions have been going on for quite some time about how to strike a balance between conservation of wildlife resources and use of area of mining activities. The issue has become controversial and legal disputes forced the government and NGOs to reconsider the entire case in the interest of conservation of eco-system, bio-diversity and industrial development in the state. Mining official said an study of the area should be carried out to demarcate viable prime areas for wildlife conservation and assess the environmental impact of existing and proposed industries near of Narayan Sarovar wildlife sanctuary.
