CHENNAI, Aug 24: The Union government has removed a major bottleneck faced by merchant-exporters of handlooms in availing duty drawback facility, by authorising the Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) to certify their claims. The council's endorsement would spare trading exporters the ordeal of producing non-availment of modvat credit on the goods they sought to export, Sabitha Bhengra, secretary of the export promotion council, told PTI here on Monday.
Previously, merchant-exporters were required to go back to the sources of their purchase and get non-availment certificate, in order to be able to apply for duty drawback.
Since, traders would be buying from several producers and exporting in one bulk, they found it tedious to get all the required certificates, she said. The government recently issued a notification that if HEPC endorsed the shipping bills of consignments despatched by merchant-exporters as pertaining to `handloom exports,' the exporters could avail the duty drawback.
Manufacturer-exporters were already enjoying the facility, Bhengra added.
