Indian scientists target silk genome
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, Aug 23: India has launched an ambitious programme to study the genome of the silkworm `Bombyx Mori' in the hope that knowledge generated would read to production of more and better quality silk.``The combined strengths of a basic research tool and economic importance of silk makes silkworm an excellent biological system to initiate genome studies'', says an official of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) which has created a separate division for silkworm genome in which six institutions are taking part. France will be a partner in this project under an agreement signed recently between DBT and the French scientific agency CNRS. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
