I've been made scapegoat for Bezbaruah's transfer -- Jayalalitha

Our Bureau
Chennai, Aug 16: Irked by media reports linking her to the recent spate of transfers of certain bureaucrats, AIADMK leader, J Jayalalitha on Sunday accused certain vested interests of making her a `scapegoat' by taking advantage of the present situation. She has now written to the prime minister to cancell these transfers and to re-instate the officals.

In a four-page statement, she once again denied any role in the transfer of M K Bezbaruah, Director, Enforcement Directorate (ED). Stressing that she had no FERA cases against her and that her associates were facing them in the Court of law, she blamed certain newspaper barons for the transfer.

She said ``it is no secret that the owners of a well known group of publications have been facing several FERA cases filed against them.

Bezbaruah was pursuing the cases very vigorously and the newspaper barons had to undergo imprisonment repeatedly. These newspaper barons hefty bribes to persons very close to prime minister to get Bezbaruh transferred out ofED.''

She also reiterated that there was no connection between her and the transfer of 15 high level officers including Revenue Secretary, N K Singh and Finance Secretary, Montek Singh Alhuwalia. These changes, she said was infact effected without the consent of Union Minister of State for Personnel, Kadumbur M R Janardhanan belonging to AIADMK.

She termed `totally contrary to the truth and nothing but falsehood' reports that she had demanded transfer of these officials when BJP emissaries Defence Minister, Gorge Fernandes and BJP leader, Pramod Mahajan met her on Wednesday as a quid pro quo for continued support.

She stressed that her name has been `unnecessarily besmirched' for something in which she was in no way involved and that she had `no objection whatsoever' to the re-instatement of the transferred officials.
