COIMBATORE, Aug 6: The Joint Action Council (JAC) of major textile trade unions has convened an urgent meeting here on August 12 to hold discussions on various problems facing the textile sector, following "the failure of both the centre and state governments to solve the crisis."Despite various memoranda submitted to the centre and state governments and ministers, no concrete measures had been taken to find a solution to the plight of textile workers, who were facing threat to their livelihood, JAC sources said.
Even the meeting union leaders held with state ministers, including labour minister, M Rahman Khan at Chennai recently, had not yielded any positive results, they said.
The steep hike in power tariff had also added to the mills problems and would lead to the closure of more units, adversely affecting the workforce, they said.
The meeting, convened by eight major trade unions, was likely to take crucial decisions and also decide whether to go on agitation to protect the interests of millworkers, the sources added.
