Comau to widen product range

Gouri Agtey Athale
Pune, Aug 6: Comau India Pvt Ltd, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Comau SpA, will bring the entire product range of all its four business units comprising mechanical, body, automation and engineering to India. The domestic subsidiary, incorporated in December 1997, is a part of Italian car-maker Fiat SpA. Fiat holds about about 60 per cent in Comau, while the rest is held by the public.

The company in the current financial year expects to achieve a turnover of $10 million, with an investment of $1 million. Comau India has a collaboration with the machine tools division of Premier Automobiles at Chinchwad for manufacturing mechanical systems. The company also plans to pick a 70 per cent stake in Conex Body Systems, which would give it a controlling stake, company managing director Nicola Obert said.

Obert was in Pune to attend a seminar on `Doing Business with Italy' hosted jointly by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI) and the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industries. OutliningComau India's order portfolio, he said this will help the company achieve its turnover target.

Comau India has orders from New Holland (India) for setting up a complete paint shop for its tractor plant as well as producing and installing Fiat India Automobile's paint and body shop, with mainframing and welding lines. Fiat India's paint shop will be set up as a separate joint venture between third parties in which Fiat can hold a stake.

Comau India is in the process of finalising orders from Bajaj Auto Ltd for the paint shop at its third plant in Chakan and with General Motors for a turnkey weld shop at Halol for its new small car. It is also in the process of tying up with Mahindra and Mahindra for its jeep facelift programme at Nashik, with Telco for its heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) at its Jamshedpur plant and with Hero Honda for a weld line.

Obert said that while cars accounted for over 70 per cent of Comau's worldwide turnover, in India the company will look at all markets from two-wheelersupwards. The company has begun to activate local companies for its domestic and overseas orders and is in the process of upgrading its vendor production lines to meet international standards. Comau India has an employee strength of 23, which the company plans to raise in future, Obert added.
