AP poised for bloom in sunflower crop
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Sunflower crop is poised for a big bloom in Andhra Pradesh with farmers doubling the amount of land under cultivation in the arid Rayalaseema region of the state for the kharif season. More and more farmers have switched over to cultivating sunflower, the highly remmunerative commercial oilseed grown in drylands during kharif and rabi seasons, mainly due to the cost effectiveness and marketing facilities available at Kurnool, official sources told PTI. "Farmers started sowing operations for sunflower in 1.47 lakh hactares of land this kharif season against 0.79 lakh hectares of land in 1997, making a remarkable increase of 108 per cent over previous season", they said. "With all the districts in the state receiving adequate rainfall, agricultural operations for both the rain-fed and dryland crops are in full swing and we expect an encouraging kharif season", the sources added.
