Chennai, July 24: The Tamilnadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd has made a net profit of Rs 3.27 crore for the first quarter of 1998-99. The company had made a loss of Rs 3.57 crore for the year ended 1997-98. Net sales for the first quarter this fiscal is Rs 80.46 crore (Rs 421.01 crore for fiscal 1997-98).Operating profit was Rs 31.94 crore (Rs 106.71 crore for FY 1997-98). Interest and financial charges came to Rs 17.08 crore (Rs 67.60 crore for 1997-98). According to TNPL officials, the profit was possible on account of a higher sales of 5000 tonnes compared to the corresponding period last year and also due to tighter cost controls.
