Vasudev tipped to don revenue secretary mantle
Special secretary (banking) CM Vasudev is tipped to become the new revenue secretary. The government will overhaul the central secretariat now that the government has successfully pushed through the finance bill in parliament. Vasudev apart, fertiliser secretary Anil Kumar is also believed to be in the race for the revenue secretary's post.

CTBT talks constructive, next meet in August
A not so flexible approach of India on the CTBT during the third round of talks with the United States has led the US remaining non-committal on the visit of president Bill Clinton later this year. Talbott said a wide range of security issues, including arms control, disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and regional and international developments were discussed.

ICICI loan approvals leapfrog 140 per cent to Rs 9,000 crore
ICICI's approval's for the first quarter of the current fiscal (April-June 1998) went up by 140% to touch Rs 9,135 crore as against Rs 3,814 crore for the corresponding period in 1997-98. Disbursements (excluding guarantees) for the first quarter ended June 30, 1998, aggregated Rs 4,225 crore, up from Rs 2,771 crore in April-June last year, thereby registering a 53% growth.

FM sees industrial recovery as direct-tax collection up 25%
Direct tax collection in the first quarter of the financial year has increased by 25%, of which 60% was from corporate tax, finance minister Yashwant Sinha told the Rajya sabha on Monday. However, he said customs duty was not doing very well due to various reasons.
