Farmers get busy as monsoon advances

THE nursery raising of kharif rice in the irrigated plains of north and northwestern India will receive the usual requirement rains within a fortnight with the southwest monsoon further advancing into parts of Saurashtra and Gujarat and its northern limit passing through Porbandar, Rajkot, Vadodara, Kota, Delhi, Patiala and Jammu on June 26. The monsoon is expected to cover the rest of the country by July 15.

According to the Crop Weather Watch Group, transplanting of paddy has also started in Assam, Haryana, Punjab and Kerala. The sowing of jowar and ragi is in progress in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Sowing of bajra has also started in Rajasthan and Haryana. The sowing of Kharif pulses has commenced in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Rajasthan with the onset of monsoon.

Sowing of kharif oilseed crops has commenced in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Sowing of groundnut is reported to be better particularly in Gujarat.

Sowing of cotton is in progress in various parts ofthe country under irrigated conditions and a coverage of 6.00, 6.25 and 5.63 lakh hectare has been reported respectively in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan as against the respective normal area coverage of 6.50, 5.89 and 5.37 lakh hectare.

The condition of early sown jute crop is reported to be satisfactory. Sowing of mesta is in progress. The planting of sugarcane is completed in northern states whereas in southern states it has just commenced. The condition of standing crop is reported to be satisfactory with no incidence of pests or diseases on the crop.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IDM), monsoon is likely to advance into Kutch and remaining areas of Saurashtra and Gujarat regions.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in east Madhya Pradesh, Vidharbha, Orissa, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and at many places in east UP, west MP, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram,Tripura, south Gujarat, Konkan, Goa south interior Karnataka. Rain or thundershowers are also likely at a few places in rest regions of the country except northwest India where weather will remain mainly dry.

Isolated heavy rain is also likely to occur in east MP, Vidharbha, Orissa, south Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The IMD, however, estimated that the countrywide average rainfall this year in June till date has been 12 cm which is 3 per cent less than normal rainfall in June. The normal rainfall in June is 15 cm, in July and August it is 30 cm and in September it is 15 cm. During the period June 1 - 24, 22 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions and 52 per cent of the districts received normal to excess rainfall.

Though the IMD has forecasted that this year's monsoon will be normal, the union agriculture ministry has drawn up a model contingency plan for facing any eventuality arising out of floods and drought in certain areas. It has circulatedthis model plan among states and urged them to implement it in coordination with relief commissioners and agriculture commissioners in case of necessity.

Though, the monsoon has so far not been unfavourable to the crops, the supply of fertilisers to the northeastern states has been affected has been affected as on account of breaches, the Railways have imposed restrictions over movement of fertilisers. The movement of fertilisers through Railways is being done up to Guwahati and further has to be done by roads. As the transportation by trucks are not taking place on account of insurgency, the supply of fertilisers has also got affected in Manipur and Tripura.
