Cotton yarn output up
Our Bureau
Though the total production of cotton yarn rose by an impressive 37 per cent between 1992-93 and 1996-97, the bulk of production continued to be in the count groups up to 40s which accounted for nearly 89 per cent of the total in 1996-97, says a study. In this broad group, the count groups up to 20s have recorded the fastest growth. During the last five years, production in the count group 1-10s doubled while that in 11-20s group rose by 48 per cent. During 1992-93, the highest share of 49 per cent of the total production was taken by the count group 21-40s which came down to 43 per cent in 1996-97. On the other hand, the count group of 1-20s which took a share of only 37 per cent in 1992-93, had a share of 46 per cent in 1996-97. This rise in the production of lower count groups is reflected in the average count spun yarn production which came down from 30.43 in 1992-93 to 27.91 in 1996-97.
