Increased construction activity pushed up domestic cement consumption by 8.42 per cent at 739 lakh tonnes during the fiscal April 1997-March 1998, according to the Cement Manufacturers' Association of India.The western region witnessed maximum construction activity during the year under review. Cement consumption in this region at 217.25 lakh tonnes, the highest in India. The northern region has been a close second with cement consumption touching 217.21 lakh tonnes.
The third largest cement consumer has been the southern region at 208.84 lakh tonnes whereas the eastern region has registered cement consumption of only 95.70 lakh tonnes. The hectic industrial activity in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat has contributed to high cement consumption in the western region of the country. Maharastra alone accounted for 94.17 lakh tonnes of cement consumption almost equal to the consumption of the entire eastern region and also the highest in the country.
Region wise there has been highest increase of9.59 per cent in the northern region, 7.95 per cent in eastern region, 7.86 per cent in the western region and 7.77 percent in southern region in the consumption of cement.
The second largest state in the consumption of cement has been Uttar Pradesh which has consumed a total of 83.82 lakh tonnes while the third highest cement user has been Gujarat at 68.91 lakh tonnes.
Tamil Nadu has registered a consumption of 67.35 lakh tonnes, Andhra Pradesh-58.63 lakh tonnes,Madhya Pradesh - 45.65 lakh tonnes, Karnataka - 43.15 lakh tonnes, Rajasthan -39.22 lakh tonnes, West Bengal - 39.11 lakh tonnes, Kerala - 38.58 lakh tonnes, Punjab-38.36 lakh tonnes, Bihar -30.06 lakh tonnes, Delhi -22.45 lakh tonnes, Haryana-19.81 lakh tonnes, Orissa -18.00 lakh tonnes, Himachal Pradesh -5.58 lakh tonnes, Assam - 5.51 lakh tonnes, Jammu and Kashmir - 4.11 lakh tonnes, Chandigarh- 3.82 lakh tonnes, Goa - 3.80 lakh tonnes, Meghalaya- 3.00 lakh tonnes, Pondicherry- 0.78 lakh tonnes and Andaman and Nicobar - 0.31 lakh tonnes.
