A crying need
The patenting of basmati rice in the United States clearly reflects the inability of Indian government and manufacturers alike to understand that the focus of ownership is shifting from physical assets to ideas, from products to processes. The government is busy trying to protect the existing output of Indian business houses, and their control over physical assets.

The pulls and pressures of oilseeds imports
The oilseeds processing industry in India, and specially the solvent extractions sector, has been clamouring for the grant of permission to import oilseeds for processing domestically. It is learnt that against the total installed capacityof 10 million tonnes, the solvent extraction industry operates at barely 40% of its rated potential.
