L&T bags contract to build Toyota car plant near Bangalore: Engineering giant Larsen & Toubro has bagged a contract to construct the Rs 50-crore Kirloskar-Toyota car plant at Bedadi near Bangalore. Company president A Ramakrishana said that talks were on with Toyota-Kirloskar Motors Ltd to finalise the details.

Monsanto India to hike equity: Monsanto India, wholly-owned subsidiary of the $9-billion Monsanto Chemicals, is hiking its equity to $100 million from $35 million. Sources said that the domestic arm plans to set up a downstream venture for introducing Monsanto's range of products. The downstream entity may enter into a joint venture for the purpose.

Blast toll rises to 47: In a fresh incident in Coimbatore early on Sunday, six suspected ultras were killed when a bomb they tried to hurl at a police party exploded in a central locality. So far, 47 people have been killed in the serial bomb blasts that rocked the city on Saturday at the venue of LK Advani's electionrally.

Alfa Laval may sell stake in ABB Alfa Stal: Alfa Laval India Ltd is considering the sale of its 49 per cent stake in ABB Alfa Stal Refrigeration Ltd, after the world-wide takeover of the latter by Danish group Sabro. A final decision is likely to be reached before the end of the current fiscal. The company holds 49 per cent stake in ABB Alfa Stal, with an investment of Rs 2.45 crore, according to Alfa Laval's balance sheet for 1996-97.

Inflation falls to 5.29 per cent: Breaking a six-week trend, the inflation rate fell by over half-a-percentage point to 5.29 per cent for the week ended January 31. Inflation, based on the wholesale-price index, fell by 0.52 percentage points to 5.29 per cent (provisional) compared to 5.81 per cent (p) the week before and 8.03 per cent in the corresponding week last year.

Country goes into polls: A large gun-totting contingent on Monday will monitor the first phase of polls for the 12th Lok Sabha to elect 222 membes of parliament from among2,200 candidates in 15 states and five union territories. Voters will decide the fate of prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral and also former first among equals HD Deve Gowda and Chandrashekhar.
