Tokyo, Feb 15: The Japanese government will drop preferential import duties on 122 items from South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Caledonia in April because of the increasing competitiveness of the products, a Japanese daily reported on Sunday. The government originally offered the lower duties on the products to help the Asian neighbours develop their export markets, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing government sources.
The imports that will no longer get preferential treatment include 78 items from South Korea, including steel and chemical products, 37 items from Taiwan that include steel and textiles, four items from Singapore that include plastic products, two items from Hong Kong that include leather goods and ferronickel from New Caledonia, it said.
