In India, Hind Lever is the leading multinational, which, in the pre-reform era, was restricted from expanding. It resorted to floating associate companies in the small-scale sector to jump the barricades.

The software giant, Microsoft, raised quite a few eyebrows with its recent acquisition of Hotmail, an 18-month-old Internet start-up, co-founded by an Indian, Sabeer Bhatia, in a multi-million dollar deal. For Kanwal S Rekhi, a US-based venture capitalist, however, the deal came as no surprise.
