With changes in social attitudes and parents becoming more aware, there is a growing demand for toys that can teach or rather toys that make learning a play. Technically, called the educational toy and games segment, this sector requires a constant flow of ideas besides investment for manufacturing.

The toy industry has flourished in India despite lack of any concrete move on the part of the government to promote it till recently. But the Toy Association of India, with the help of the government, has chalked out a number of plans. First, among them is a toy city in Greater Noida.

Of tender touch and hard selling
The soft toy market comes next only to electronic and plastic in terms of the total demand. However, in India, till a few years back, soft toys meant only a gift from abroad. Things have changed since then. Soft toys are not only a major component of the toy industry, with a demand of about 15% of the Rs 300-crore toy market in the country, but are also being exported.

Letters from a Goa prisoner to writers
From his cell in Goa's Central Jail, Sudhir Sharma, Inmate No 797, has been fighting a long and lonely battle to read. Although the Constitution and the Supreme Court have allowed him to go ahead, the prison authorities have debarred him. He wrote to Pahal editor who sent him his books but only to be returned as the authorities would not let him read them.
