Chelliah flays Centre policies

UNI
CHENNAI, January 4: Well known economist Dr Raja J Chelliah today accused the union government of acting as the biggest impediment for economic growth.

Chelliah said the Centre had put the state budgets in a dissaray. The states were trying to pass on the burden to the centre and vice versa, he said and added the centre-state financial relations had to be placed on even keel. Chelliah was addressing a press conference on the eve of a symposium, Multinationals and Indian industries and Foreign media and Indian democracy, organised here by the Dr PS Lokanathan Memorial Society to commemorate the birth centenary of eminent economist Dr PS Lokanathan. Chelliah, who disagreed with the vice chairman of the society, former union agriculture minister C Subramaniam's view that the economic liberalisation had not removed poverty due to alleged neglect of agricultural sector, said World Bank studies showed that from 1953 to 94, poverty was only proportionate. 50 per cent of the proportionate poor were SCs and STs, he added.
