Tyre dealers urge centre not to impose price cap

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, July 14: The all India tyre dealers federation has urged the centre not to pose hurdles on the import of new and used tyres, including radials, by imposing any price cap or hiking duty.

In a letter sent to commerce minister B B Ramaiah, federation convenor S P Singh said: ``Import of tyres, both new and used, should be given full trial and there is no urgency to hamper the exports by way of imposing any price cap or duty hike.''

The government should watch the situation till December 31 and hold a review meeting in January next, he said. Stating that there was hardly any use for import of used or retreaded tyres for personal vehicles, but its import and subsequent use by commercial transport operators should be allowed, Singh said.

He also urged the commerce minister to invite the surface transport ministry officials also to protect the interest of truck operators. A delegation is likely to meet the commerce ministry officials soon.
