SummaryTrade analyst, Amod Mehra says, "Shuddh Desi Romance has done extremely well."

Last week, the box-office saw the release of multi-starrer Zanjeer that had names like Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and South star Ramcharan associated with it. The film clashed with YRF’s Shuddh Desi Romance (SDR), starring Parineeti Chopra, Sushant Singh Rajput and newbie Vaani Kapoor. Both the movies were high on buzz, the first for being the remake of 1973, Amitabh Bachchan-starrer by the same name, while the other for being a youth-centric rom-com and also for its chart-bursting music.

Youth connect

*Talking about the film’s performance, trade analyst, Amod Mehra says, “Shuddh Desi Romance has done extremely well. The kind of money it made on its first day is commendable, especially since the film had got a limited release, as compared to Zanjeer, which was released widely all over India.” The Maneesh Sharma directorial had 900 plus prints and was released at 1050 screens. The movie, which was made on a budget of Rs.25 crore, according to trade analyst Vinod Mirani, has garnered Rs.5.75 crore on its opening day.

“Though the film has a limited release, it will only grow from here. People, specially the youth, is loving Shuddh... . It has the caliber of performing better than Aashiqui 2,” expresses Mehra.

Failed opening

* While, YRF’s rom-com is high on critical and popular response, the Puneet and Sumeet Mehra production venture, Zanjeer gets a below average response on its opening day. The movie, which was made on a budget of Rs.60-70 crore, and was released across 2068 screens, could only garner Rs.3.58 crore on Friday. Confirms Utpal Acharya, Head Distribution, Reliance Entertainment, “Yes the collection has been disappointing!”

In Mumbai’s single screen Chitra, the film received 30 per cent occupancy on Friday. According to Rakesh Sippy, Raksha Exhibitors Proprietors, “Whatever money Zanjeer has made is only through single screens. It is not doing well in multiplexes at all. In fact seeing the performance of Zanjeer, the theatre owners might give better space to Shuddh...

While the Hindi version of Zanjeer has been disappointing, Acharya is happy that its Telugu version, titled Thoofan that released on the same day is doing extremely well in the South. The movie released at 1300 screens in Andhra Pradesh, and garnered over Rs. 8 crore on its opening day itself. “Due to the political unrest, Andhra Pradesh has had no new releases since a couple of weeks. So when Thoofan released, people welcomed it,” says Acharya.
