: BROADCASTING

I am in the final year of BBA. I want to take up a career in the broadcast media after my graduation. My interest is in news anchoring, reading, production, presentation and preparation. Which are the institutes offering post graduation diploma for it? What would be the selection procedure and type of questions asked in the entrance test?

Sharada

You could take up a post-graduate diploma or degree in journalism or in broadcast journalism or in mass communication for the career you have in mind. Prominent institutions would be Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi

(www.iimc.gov.in ), Asian College of Journalism, Chennai (www.asianmedia.org), A J K Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia ( http://www.jmi.nic.in ), Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (www.bhu.ac.in), Amity School of Communication, Noida (www.amity.edu), Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism, Bhopal (www.mcu.ac.in), Times School of Journalism (www.tcms.in) and the Manorama School of Communication, Kottayam

( www.manoramajschool.com ). The University of Mumbai, Calcutta and Pune also offer such programmes. The selection procedure usually comprises a written test and interview. The written test normally has both objective and conventional (short answers, composition, précis) questions to test your writing skills, capacity for self expression, editing, vocabulary, general awareness including current affairs and related abilities. There may be a test on media analysis and assessment of media-related work (portfolio). Examples are indicative.

MCA

I am pursuing BSc Bio. I want to take admission in MCA. Which are the colleges and examinations to apply for?

Pawan Kumar

I am presuming that you studied mathematics till class XII, because without it you would not be able to apply for most institutions offering MCA courses. In some cases as in Delhi University (www.du.ac.in), IIT Roorkee (www.iitr.ac.in) you would require mathematics as a subject in graduation as well, but you would be eligible for the PGDCA programme at Delhi University with Maths till class XII. You may apply for MCA at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (www.jnu.ac.in), University of Mumbai (www.mu.ac.in) and other institutions using MAH-MCA-CET (www.dte.org.in ) and institutions in Gujarat using GCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Test for MCA). Many states have a common entrance test for MCA.

AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT

I have done MSc in botany. I want to know to more about the field of agri-business management, its scope and prospects. What would be the type of placements?

Sujay Choudhary

Agribusiness managers may work for large agribusinesses involved in the production, marketing of seeds, fertilisers, farm machinery and equipment. Some find placement in business involved in the production, procurement, processing and marketing of crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro forestry, horticulture, dairying, marketing, agro processing, and food processing while others provide services such as export and import, rural banking, financing agri-projects, micro-insurance, logistics, water management, research and development, and rural energy. Quality of placements depends upon the student and the reputation of the institution where he or she studied and the demand in the sector. As of now, prospects are excellent.

CAREER OPTIONS

I have completed BDS. I come from a middle-class family. I want to pursue further studies, may be MDS but it would be too expensive for my budget. Which are the other streams I can join or is MDS the only option for further education? Please throw some light on future scope of other careers with good remuneration.

You can also take up Post Graduate Diploma courses in dentistry, if the cost is manageable.

Log on to www.dciindia.org for information on institutions. Other choices could be MSc in Biotechnology or other biological sciences, P G in Hospital Management/Administration, Pharmaceutical Management or MBA, LLB and Master of Social Work, Journalism and Mass Communication.
